What is saw palmetto?
Saw palmetto is a low, shrubby palm with fan-shaped leaves. Its Latin name is Serenoa repens, and it belongs to the palm family. It is the most common palm in the United States. It is long-lived: some of the larger plants are centuries old.
Where does saw palmetto come from?
Saw palmetto is native to the southeastern United States, from South Carolina to Florida and west to Louisiana. The part used is the fruit, a dark berry about the size and shape of a black olive. Pickers gather it by hand in late summer and fall, and Florida has required a permit since 2018.
What does saw palmetto look, taste and smell like, and why?
The dried fruit is dark brown to black, a little oily, and 1.5 to 3 centimeters long. It has a strong fruity smell and a sweetish, slightly sharp taste. The fruit is high in fats and fiber. The leaf stalks carry sharp teeth like a saw, which is how the plant got its name.
What compounds are in saw palmetto berries?
Saw palmetto berries hold fatty acids, plant sterols, plant pigments called flavonoids, and long sugar chains called polysaccharides. Fatty acids are the building blocks of fats; the main ones here are oleic, lauric and myristic acid. Plant sterols are a family of compounds found in plants and plant oils; the main one here is beta-sitosterol. The European standard for the dried fruit sets a minimum of 11% total fatty acids.

What exactly is in our capsule?
Each capsule holds 500 mg of an organic saw palmetto blend. The blend is fruit powder, which is dried, ground fruit, plus fruit extract, a concentrated form. The extract is standardized, which means adjusted, to 45% fatty acids. The other ingredients are rice flour and hypromellose, made from plant fiber (cellulose), which forms the capsule shell.
How is saw palmetto extract made?
An extract is made by soaking the plant in a solvent, a liquid that pulls out chosen parts. The European Medicines Agency names three main solvents for saw palmetto: hexane, alcohol and carbon dioxide. Hexane is a liquid also used to extract edible oils from seeds.
Where does the name come from, and what is the plant's history?
The saw in the name comes from the sharp teeth on the leaf stalks. Palmetto comes from the Spanish word palmito, and has been in English since at least 1615. Native peoples of the Southeast, such as the Seminole and Creek, gathered and ate the berries. The berries also feed wildlife: in Florida they are the single most important food for black bears.
What do researchers study about saw palmetto?
Researchers have studied how extracts made with different solvents differ in their makeup. They have built lab tests to check that a saw palmetto extract is authentic. They have measured how much the plant sterol content varies between supplements. These are study topics, not claims about our product.
