Questions and answers

What is spearmint?

Spearmint is a leafy herb in the mint family. Its Latin name is Mentha spicata. Other common names are garden mint and lamb mint. The plant lives for many years and spreads by creeping stems.

Where does spearmint come from?

Spearmint is native to Europe and Asia. It now also grows wild in North America and parts of Africa. The part used is the leaf, fresh or dried.

What does spearmint look, taste and smell like, and why?

Spearmint has bright green, tooth-edged leaves on square stems, and a strong minty smell and taste. The smell comes from a scented oil in the leaf. The main compound in spearmint oil is carvone. Peppermint is a different mint, and its oil is mainly menthol and menthone.

What compounds are in spearmint leaf?

Spearmint leaf holds a scented oil and a family of plant compounds called phenolics. The oil is usually rich in carvone, the compound that gives spearmint its smell. Carvone has a mirror-image twin that smells like caraway instead. The most abundant phenolic measured in spearmint tea is rosmarinic acid, also found in rosemary and sage.

4 more questions about spearmint

What exactly is in our capsule?

Our capsule holds organic spearmint leaf, dried and ground. It is the leaf itself, not an extract, which is a concentrated form made from a plant. One serving is 3 capsules, which hold 1,000 mg of leaf. The other ingredients are rice flour and hypromellose, made from plant fiber (cellulose), which forms the capsule shell.

How is the spearmint leaf prepared?

Our spearmint leaf is dried and ground, with no extraction step. Mint growers cut the crop in full bloom, late in the morning on a dry, sunny day. An extract is different: it is made by soaking a plant in a liquid such as water or alcohol. We use spearmint leaf, not an extract.

How old is the name spearmint, and what does its Latin name mean?

The word spearmint has been in English since at least 1562. The Latin name Mentha comes from Minthe, a water nymph in Greek myth, and spicata means spike. Its leaves are used fresh or dried to flavor sweets, drinks, salads, sauces and many other foods. A United States food rule lists spearmint among spices and natural seasonings.

What do researchers study about spearmint?

Researchers have studied the oil in spearmint and how its makeup changes from place to place. They have measured the phenolic compounds in spearmint tea. They have also reviewed carvone, the main compound in the oil. These are study topics, not claims about our product.

Clean Label Project CertifiedAn outside group tested this product for heavy metals, pesticides and plastic chemicals that labels do not list.

What it checks

  • A brand sends a product to Clean Label Project. Independent labs screen it for heavy metals, pesticides (including glyphosate), phthalates and bisphenols.
  • Clean Label Project judges each product on its own against limits set by product type.
  • Clean Label Project says certified products are tested again every year.

What it does not mean

  • It does not mean the product has zero contaminants. Clean Label Project notes heavy metals occur naturally.
  • It does not check that the label amounts are correct. That is a different test.
