High Quality and Effective!

Bought this for my lovable but moody husband, and I can't believe the results! After just a few days of use, he said he's able to concentrate better and he feels more relaxed. I've noticed that he's in a better mood and he's also in the mood for you-know-what more often than before. Great stuff!

Good- I always try to get third party tested products. I have only been taking it for a month so not really seeing the results I’m looking for as much but still feel like I’m noticing some small changes. Bad- Second purchase of this supplement and both times the amount in the bottle was short. Bottle should have 60 and both times I got 56 and 59. Also, serving size says 1 capsule with 60 servings however the instruction states to take 1 capsule, twice a day (2 total each day) which would mean there are only 30 servings per bottle. This is misleading when purchasing thinking you are getting 2 months worth when you are only get 1 months worth.

Questions and answers

What is ashwagandha?

Ashwagandha is an evergreen shrub in the nightshade family. Its Latin name is Withania somnifera. It is also called winter cherry or Indian ginseng, but it is not a ginseng. Tomato, potato and eggplant belong to the same plant family.

Where does ashwagandha come from?

Ashwagandha is native from southern Europe and Africa across Asia to central China. It favors dry, sunny places and is widely farmed in the drier parts of India. The part used is the root, which is dried.

What does ashwagandha look, taste and smell like, and why?

The dried root is buff to grey-yellow with long wrinkles. It has a horse-like smell and a sweetish, yet bitter, taste. That smell gave the plant its name: in Sanskrit, ashwa means horse and gandha means smell. The shrub also bears small green-yellow flowers and orange-red berries, which are not in our capsule.

What compounds are in ashwagandha root?

Ashwagandha root holds two main groups of natural compounds: withanolides and alkaloids. Withanolides are steroidal lactones, compounds built on a frame of linked carbon rings. A 2009 review counted more than 130 withanolides across the nightshade family. Alkaloids are natural compounds that contain nitrogen.

4 more questions about ashwagandha

What exactly is in our capsule?

Each capsule holds 300 mg of KSM-66®, a branded extract, or concentrated form, of ashwagandha root. It is vegan and standardized to more than 5% withanolides. Standardized means the maker measures one chosen compound, called a marker, and adjusts each batch to a set level. The other ingredients are rice flour and hypromellose, made from plant fiber (cellulose), which forms the capsule shell.

How is ashwagandha extract made?

An extract is made by soaking the plant in a liquid such as water or alcohol. The liquid can then be dried to a powder for use in capsules. Makers use different extraction and standardizing steps, so ashwagandha extracts are not all alike.

Where does the name come from, and how long has it been used?

Ashwagandha is a Sanskrit name that joins the words for horse and smell. The root has a long history in Ayurveda, a traditional system of medicine from India. Ayurveda itself began in India perhaps 3,000 years ago. The root also has a history in Unani, another traditional system used in India.

What do researchers study about ashwagandha?

Researchers have studied how the body takes in withanolides from different extracts. They have studied the safety of root extracts in healthy adults, and run a 90-day study in rats. They have also reviewed the compounds found in the plant. These are study topics, not claims about our product.

Clean Label Project CertifiedAn outside group tested this product for heavy metals, pesticides and plastic chemicals that labels do not list.

What it checks

  • A brand sends a product to Clean Label Project. Independent labs screen it for heavy metals, pesticides (including glyphosate), phthalates and bisphenols.
  • Clean Label Project judges each product on its own against limits set by product type.
  • Clean Label Project says certified products are tested again every year.

What it does not mean

  • It does not mean the product has zero contaminants. Clean Label Project notes heavy metals occur naturally.
  • It does not check that the label amounts are correct. That is a different test.

More questions? We're here to help

Is it safe? How is it taken?

Suggested use: Take 1 capsule (1 serving) twice daily, preferably with a meal, or as directed by a physician.

Caution: Product may have immunostimulant effects and might exacerbate autoimmune disease. Contains sedative effects. Discontinue two weeks before surgery. Use caution with blood pressure-lowering or sedative supplements and medications.

Can I take it while pregnant?

No. We strongly recommend women not use Ashwagandha during pregnancy. Please talk with your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or contemplating pregnancy.

Can I take it while nursing or breastfeeding?

There is not enough reliable information available to answer this question. Please consult your own healthcare provider to find out whether it is a good option for you and your baby before taking Ashwagandha.

Can I take it with other supplements or medicines?

Please use caution when taking it alongside any supplement or medication that can lower blood pressure and/or have sedative effects. Ashwagandha may have additive effects with supplements or medications that act in these ways.

We recommend you speak with your healthcare provider before combining Ashwagandha with any supplement or medication.

Why is it one capsule twice a day?

Each capsule has 300 mg of KSM-66 root extract. We suggest 1 capsule twice daily, preferably with a meal. Taking it twice a day splits the daily amount into two parts.

How long does one bottle last?

One bottle has 60 capsules. At 1 capsule twice a day, that is 2 capsules a day, so one bottle lasts 30 days.

How long should I take it?

We cannot advise you on how long to take Ashwagandha since the reasons you are taking it will likely impact how long you continue. It is best to speak with your healthcare provider to determine what would be best for you, personally.

Does it contain allergens?

Our Ashwagandha supplements contain no animal products, gluten, soy, or nuts. The other ingredients are rice flour and hypromellose (the capsule). Our products are made in a facility that also processes common food allergens, so we cannot promise the complete chemical absence of any allergen unless listed on the label.

What does standardized to more than 5% withanolides mean?

Withanolides are natural compounds in ashwagandha root. Standardized means the extract is made to meet a set level of them. Ours is made to contain more than 5% withanolides.

Can I return it for a refund?

Yes. We offer a full refund on the purchase price minus shipping of our supplement products any time within 90 days (up to 3 bottles full or empty) for orders shipped in the United States. Please contact us through our Contact Us page for return instructions.

How big are the capsules?

Our Ashwagandha capsule is size 0, 0.84 inches by 0.29 inches, about as long as a US nickel is wide. One serving is 1 capsule.
